New Launch Procedures for Hand-Launched Watercraft at Blue Mesa Reservoir

New procedures for launching watercraft on Blue Mesa Reservoir at Curecanti National Recreation Area for the 2012 season will take effect on May 1.

A full list of procedures can be found at http://go.nps.gov/mussel.  Visitors may also stop by the Elk Creek Visitor Center between the hours of 8 am and 4 pm, or can call (970) 641-2337, extension 205.

 Significant changes include:

• Non-motorized craft that are listed on the Colorado State hand launch list (kayak, canoe, raft, belly boat, float tube, windsurf board, sail board, or inner tube) do not need an inspection and can launch anywhere on Blue Mesa. Trailers used to transport these vessels may not enter the water at any time. Owners of these vessels can receive a season-long launch pass and sticker for their vessel via appointment by calling (970) 209-2335; season passes are not required.

• Watercraft not included on the Colorado State hand launch list may qualify for a seasonal hand-launch pass.

• These vessels must be hand-launched (no trailer enters the water during launch or retrieval), must not have a gas powered or water-cooled motor (electric trolling motors are okay), and must not have enclosed containers or compartments that regularly hold water.

• An assessment of any vessel not specifically included on the Colorado State hand launch list is required. Appointments for assessments can be scheduled by calling (970) 209-2335 after May 1, 2012.
