With soaring gas prices it’s time to stay in your own backyard and explore what belongs to you! Gunnison County offers nearly two million acres of public lands just waiting to be explored! Hike, camp, swim, gaze at the clear dark night skies and enjoy our slice of paradise!

Sometimes the best way to connect as a family is to get as far away as possible from everyday busyness. The friendly mountain towns in Gunnison County are authentic alternatives to life's complexities and a great place to have fun. Beautifully packaged by nature, there is something for a all levels, and ages, whether it's hiking, camping, bicycling, rafting, kayaking, horseback riding, fishing, boating, skiing, snowboarding or snowshoeing. Bring your family to discover the outdoors and end up rediscovering it yourself at places like like Curecanti National Recreation Area, Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, Blue Mesa (Colorado’s largest lake), Lake Irwin and Taylor Reservoir. We have an Adaptive Sports Center ready to assist a family member with physical and cognitive disabilities with year round outdoor activities, too!

Activities

In Gunnison and Crested Butte there are activities that are well suited to children of all ages whether educational or recreational. Depending on the season, you can choose the activity that best suits your family’s needs. Gratefully, there are few activities that are not suitable and of interest to children. For times when you just need day out of the sun or snow, you can visit one of our heritage museums, visit the Trailhead Children's Discovery Museum and Arts Center, take in a fun play, or free evening concert. For days when you want to get out in the backcountry to hike, bike, and explore there are millions of ways to entertain and outfitters to help get you there- and back!


Dining

Dining can sometimes be a hassle with kids and their associated messes and general rambunctious and exuberant demeanor... Be reassured Gunnison-Crested Butte has all kinds of truly kid friendly establishments! To see the complete list, you can view the options from the main dining page. Most restaurants have excellent kids menus and fun activities to entertain while you wait for your delicious meal.


Gear

Shopping for gear, or just want to rent some? Equipment stores in the valley offer children’s equipment and some do rentals. A fine selection from kids boots to kids hats can be found almost anywhere around town. In the mountains the parenting motto should be- "dress in layers" and always have an extra hat, gloves and of course sun glasses and sun screen for year-round activities! PS. Our thrift stores are an excellent place to pick up and return used gear for any sized child, and adults too!

Local events range from fun to educational and vary from day to day. You can take your pick from our detailed event listing. Participating in our experience here is a great way to take home lasting memories. While snow balls in the cooler can be another way, we suggest checking out the local event calendar for an experience that suits your interests. Many of our larger events have specific kid-zones complete with bouncy houses etc.
