Well-known authors and publishers will come together with aspiring writers and avid readers this summer for literary workshops in Gunnison-Crested Butte, Colo. Western State College will host “Writing the Rockies: The Gunnison Creative Writers Workshop” in Gunnison, June 4 - 7, and Crested Butte Friends of the Library will present “Readers in the Rockies” and the “Crested Butte Writers Conference” in Crested Butte, June 19 - 21.

Writing the Rockies: The Gunnison Creative Writers Workshop returns to Western State College for the fifth summer, June 4 - 7 The workshop, originally called “Writing the West,” attracts participants from throughout the country and from as far away as Japan to work with a number of highly-respected authors of literature about the American West. It is endorsed by the Western Writers of America.

Published authors serve as faculty, and a book publisher and an agent are on hand for special presentations throughout the workshop. Working with participants of all levels, these individuals will help writers hone their craft through lectures and will mix with participants during events outside of workshop sessions. A schedule and faculty roster will be available in the near future.

Readers in the Rockies & Crested Butte Writers Conference, Crested Butte, June 19 - 21


Readers in the Rockies returns for a seventh exciting year when well-known authors gather with aspiring writers for Authors’ Day on the Saturday of the Crested Butte Writers’ Conference, June 19 - 21. Crested Butte Friends of the Library presents the event annually to generate an exchange of ideas in a friendly, relaxed, high-mountain setting.Donald Maass will be attending the Crested Butte Writers Conference and giving a 2 hour workshop on his new book, Putting Fire in your Fiction, scheduled for release in May. We will be one of the first to have him do that workshop, and we're thrilled about that prospect!

In addition, Lisa Rector, a fantastic freelance editor who specializes in late draft writing, will also give a workshop at the CB Writers Conference on the Sagging Middle.

The following acquiring agents and editors will attend:
  • Adam Wilson, editor at MIRA (and final judge for the romance category of the Sandy contest)
  • Katherine Nintzel, Editor at Harper Collins (and final judge for the mainstream adult fiction category)

Our Keynote Speaker for the 2009 Conference will be William Bernhardt, bestselling author of legal thrillers. Mr. Bernhardt has also graciously agreed to lead a workshop and an additional talk.

Aryn Kyle, author of the national best seller, The God of Animals, will host a critique workshop of 20 manuscript pages with attendees who write YA and adult fiction. Details to follow.

Rocky Mountian Fiction Writers' own Tina Ann Forkner will talk about her newest book, Rose House and share her experiences about balancing the purity/integrity of writing with the commercial success of an author's books.

This year we also have an exciting new venue at the Grand Lodge at Crested Butte
