In the summer, the Gunnison National Forest and several wilderness areas provide the perfect backdrop to our spectacular playground of rivers, hiking & biking trails, wildflowers, Colorado's largest lake – Blue Mesa Reservoir - Curecanti National Recreation Area and the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, just to name a few. The Gunnison and Crested Butte area are two of Colorado's best all around outdoor recreation areas, as demonstrated by the many world-class athletes that call this home, including Dave Wiens who edged out Lance Armstrong during the 2008 Leadville 100 bicycle race.

Our rich ranching heritage is seen "live" during Colorado's oldest and longest running rodeo, Cattlemen's Days, and our western and mining heritage is chronicled in 4 area museums. Culture is elevated to big city heights in the Gunnison Arts Center, the Crested Butte Center for the Arts and Crested Butte Mountain Theatre, Colorado's longest continuously running community theatre.
