Colorado Rafting Information

Whitewater enthusiasts have been coming to float our local rivers and streams for years whether it was in kayaks, canoes or rafts. One of the largest tributaries to the Colorado River, the Gunnison River, is made up of a network of steep creeks and streams. From Class I-VI, there is something for everyone. Mostly, folks come rafting on the Taylor and Gunnison Rivers for a half day thrill on Class II & III. Outfitters offer longer trips including lunch and can accommodate large groups, as well as kayaking trips.
Gunnison's new whitewater park is a big deal these days, but our claim to fame has been some of the steepest and fastest rivers in the West.

Taylor River

The Taylor is an awesome whitewater river. The steep little stream offers a variety of long, fun rapids to shoot. Due to its relatively steep character and shallow waters only advanced rafters, kayakers and canoeists (whitewater boats equipped with flotation ONLY) should attempt the drops.
A number of well marked put-ins and take-outs have been created where the rapids are clearly marked with interpretive signs.

Gunnison River

The Gunnison River has a number of classic Colorado rafting options, and has become one of the most popular rafting trips in our area. While characterized as a scenic stretch there are a number of fun rapids to negotiate in the white water park. The Gunnison River is an excellent family rafting adventure. Skilled outfitters take little kids (starting at age 2), groups, and individuals looking for a mellow river to learn kayaking on. Private boaters are encouraged to check with local outfitters for the best recommended run for their ability current levels. There are a number of low bridges that can not be portaged at high water. The most popular day trip is from North Bridge (across from Garlic Mike's) to McCabe's lane or to the whitewater park. Fishing is best from Almont to North bridge.

Class V Kayaking Runs

Gunnison and Crested Butte are famed for some sick waterfall drops, and FAST slides in the spring run-off. A few of the favorites are Oh-Be-Joyful, the East, Spring Creek, Little Daisy, Cascade, Slate, Crystal, and of course the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. There are scores of other small creeks out there with amazing drops but they can only be run with just the right flows- and the prerequisite courage! If you're not into doing any of these runs, and would like to watch instead you are in the same boat as many others. For the best spectating, plan to be here in mid June and it's more than likely you will see tons of boaters hitting the more accessible falls, like 'Oh-Be', every afternoon when flows are at their peak.

Whitewater Canoeing

With properly fitted float bags there are a bunch of fun runs that are well suited to the Canoeist. Whether in open boats or in closed test your ability on the "white tight and technical" Taylor, cruise the Gunnison, or journey to the Lake Fork of the Gunnison form more adventure. The whitewater park is also a fun spot to surf and practice skills for any whitewater boater. Lake canoes can negotiate the Gunnison River safely, but is not the best suited craft. Contact a local outfitter with any questions you may have, shuttles, or for last minute gear purchases.
