Kick Up Your Heels at the Gunnison Western Heritage Festival Chuck wagons, kids’ rodeo, cowboy poetry, dancing & more on Oct. 3

Experiencing the West in Gunnison, Colo., is the real thing.  In fact, American Cowboy named Gunnison-Crested Butte one of the "20 Best Places to Live the West" in 2009.  We have real cowboys, a thriving ranching community, and a few traffic jams, courtesy of the occasional cattle drive.  The Gunnison Western Heritage Festival on Oct. 3 is a celebration of this rich Western American lifestyle.

All activities will take place outdoors at Jorgensen Park and the park's covered ice rink, except the ranch rodeo at the Fred R. Field Western Heritage Center.  Have no fear; there will be plenty to keep the posse entertained and it's free, except for competing in the ranch rodeo and eating at the chuck wagon-style barbecue.

Trail Report 7.8.09

The flowers are out, the trails are sweet, and there's still some snow left up high and on the north slopes. Suffice it to say, summer is here! For those of you who are waiting to hike to Aspen or ride the high alpine trails around Crested Butte you'll have to wait just a bit longer. Many of these high elevation (above 11,000') trails are dry by mid-July.

Further south of Crested Butte in the high mountains around Gunnison and Saguache there is less snow and some amazingly dry trails above 11,000'.

This week's trail of the week is the Walrod Gulch Loop: Walrod Gulch "The Wall", 405.2A, 410, 409, 412. It's not easy to bike it all but the flowers are great and so are the views. Any one of these sections, 412 especially, will make for a great hike. Enjoy!
