Gunnison County is home to some of the most beautiful campsites in all of Colorado. We offer everything from campgrounds and RV Resorts with all of the amenities to wilderness campsites accessible only by foot. The best way to get out into nature when you visit is to spend a night there. Camping in Gunnison County offers the perfect opportunity for the kind of adventure-filled vacation you will be talking about for years to come.
Primitive Camping and Backpacking
Many of the river valleys in Gunnison County are home to free, primitive campsites, all on a first-come, first-served basis. They are great options for more experienced campers who have experience with camping without running water, dumpsters, or outhouses. However, on busy weekend nights, they do tend to fill up with locals trying to get out and enjoy the wild. You'll also want to make sure you're obeying all posted private property and Forest Service signs. Or, get a permit from the Forest Service, strap on your backpack, and head into the wilderness for the night. Also be aware of any fire bans. The Visitor Information Centers in Gunnison, Crested Butte, Mt. Crested Butte, and Gothic are great locations to stop by for more information.
Private and Public Campgrounds in Gunnison County
In addition to the multitude of public lands that allow primitive camping, we also have privately owned and public campgrounds throughout Gunnison County, including many that accommodate RVs. If you're a less experienced camper, or have members in your group who prefer to camp somewhere with a few extra amenities, our campgrounds offer a great option. However, they also fill up quickly. It's best to make a reservation, if possible, if you're hoping to camp during a summer weekend. For more information about making camping reservations, we recommend checking out our Camping and RVing pages.
