Mountain Biking Trails and Trail Report

Enjoy the extensive network of mountain bike trails that cover hundreds of miles around Crested Butte and the surrounding Gunnison National Forest. Below are a compilation of suggested self-guided tours. There are too many to list here, but our local bike shops and guides can be very helpful in assisting you further. Accurately depicted topographical trail maps, which detail these trails and others available in the area, are available at local mountain bike shops.  Be sure to check out all the unique biking events we have to offer.

 BEGINNER MOUNTAIN BIKE RIDES

 Skyland/ Tony's Trail: Crested Butte

6.5 mile loop. 250 feet of elevation gain. This loop combines some pavement and some really great singletrack that is smooth and enjoyable. You can ride this loop either way, but coming down Tony's is a favorite due to the smooth rolling descent.

 The Lower Loop: Crested Butte

10 miles round trip. One of Crested Butte's most popular trails, with recently opened new trails. An excellent choice for those new to the sport or those of you looking for a more mellow yet very scenic ride. Great for wildflower viewing and kids.

Warming House
Start your day here and follow this trail out of the base area to gain access to the network of singletrack trails. Features gradual grades and fun rollers to get your heart rate up.

Painter Boy
This longtime Crested Butte favorite takes you through fields of wildflowers and beautiful stands of aspen trees.  A great connector trail, Painter Boy can be accessed by the Red Lady Express via Horseshoe or the Luge Trails

Downhill Designated Trails

Luge
Inspired by CBMR’s own Adaptive Sport Center hand cyclists, Luge is a wider gravity assisted singletrack trail that flows through moderate terrain featuring man made berms and rollers.  

Trail map & lift tickets are available at the base area.

 2 Hartman Rock's Trails: Gunnison

This short loop should take about an hour to complete and is an excellent loop to become oriented with the area which features over 40 miles of singletrack and 33 miles of dirt roads.

Route #1: Park at the top of Kill Hill and use this map, to connect Main St., Sea of Sage, The Luge, and follow the road back to Kill Hill parking area.

Route #2: Follow the Groomed Cross Country Skiing Loop for 12 K of scenic dirt roads*.

*Alternate access from McCabe's Lane, West of Gunnison.

OPEN

The roads and trails north of the power line are open for mechanized and motorized travel. All of the roads and trails south of the power line remain closed for Gunnison Sage-grouse conservation until May 15, 2013. Additionally, The Enchanted Forest trail is still snow covered and will remain closed until further notice.

INTERMEDIATE MOUNTAIN BIKE RIDES

Farris Creek: Crested Butte

20 miles round trip. 1400 feet cumulative elevation gain. A great intermediate ride off of Brush Creek Road.

CLOSED  
 Lower 401: Gothic

7 miles round trip from Copper Creek trailhead. The little sister of the famed 401is a beautiful wooded ride with little traffic. Often referred to as the 401 extension is a great ride on its own with out any massive climbs and with plenty of fun trail and a bit of dirt road.

Snodgrass: Mt. Crested Butte

10 miles round trip. 900 feet cumulative elevation gain. One of Crested Butte's most well-known trails. Offers some beautiful scenery and a chance for some of the best wildflower viewing around. Open partial season only.

CLOSED From CBMBA: Cyclists, please yield to the horseback riders. Dismount and ask the wrangler how to proceed. Do not SPOOK the horses by riding by too fast or too close.
 Strand Hill: Crested Butte

17 miles round trip. 1500 feet cumulative elevation gain. A local favorite with plenty of single track riding.

Painter Boy
This longtime Crested Butte favorite takes you through fields of wildflowers and beautiful stands of aspen trees.  A great connector trail, Painter Boy can be accessed by the Red Lady Express via Horseshoe or the Luge Trails.

Meander
The name says it all.  Meander your way through a beautiful mountain landscape on excellent single track that overlooks the East River valley.  Follow Gothic Road back to the base or climb up Prospector to the top of Painter Boy.

Horseshoe
Horseshoe skirts along the base of some of Crested Butte’s famous steep terrain and allows you to connect the Westside trail with Meander, Painter Boy and Columbine to make an incredible cross country loop from the base area.

Prospector
Enjoy over two miles of classic Colorado singletrack that winds through alpine meadows and pine forest. This intermediate singletrack takes you to Gothic Rd where you can pedal back to the base area or use it to link with Meander or Snodgrass.

Columbine
Wind your way up Columbine Hill through grassy meadows and Aspen forest.  From the top of Columbine trail loop around Horseshoe and Westside for a longer day, or explore one of the many other great options back to the base area.

 Downhill Designated Trails

Mineral Point
A great mix of natural terrain, single track and manmade obstacles.  Look for more features to be added through the summer on this trail.

With 70+ miles of options here are 3 sweet routes that will keep you smiling and wanting more. Please reference the map to connect these routes.

Route#1: Jacks, Beck's, Rocky Ridge, The Luge, Hogs Back, Beck's, Jack's

Route #2: Jack's, Main St., Josh O's, Skyline, Rocky Ridge, Beck's, Jack's

Route#3: Bambi's, outback, Enchanted Forest, Dave Mo's, Dirty Sock, Buddy Bear, Skyline, Bambi's

EXPERT MOUNTAIN BIKE RIDES

 Reno/Flag/Bear/Deadman's:
Crested Butte South

22 miles round trip. 3,000 feet cumulative elevation gain. A true challenge. This ride is a combination of the Reno Divide, Flag and Bear Creek Trails. The trailhead is located on Cement Creek Road.
CLOSED  
 Teocalli Ridge: Crested Butte

25 miles round trip. 2200 feet cumulative elevation gain. Plenty of intermediate and advanced single track make this a challenge and a local favorite for the awesome downhill and amazing views.
CLOSED From CBMBA: Teocalli Ridge Trail is closed to all users until the trail is repaired-likely next year. Only ride as an out and back on the uphill. Absolutely awesome flowers in the area.
 Trail 401: Gothic

24 miles round trip. 2800 feet cumulative elevation gain. This one is a favorite among those who frequent the trails around Crested Butte. It's difficult, but well worth the effort. It offers a lot of advanced single track.

 Deer Creek: Crested Butte

28 miles round trip. If you are looking for a classic cross-country ride, this is it. With equal amounts of 'up' and 'down' riding either direction is suitable. The preferred direction is from Brush Creek to Gothic.

 Dyke Trail: Irwin

16 miles round trip. 1000 feet cumulative elevation gain. A favorite fall ride in Colorado's largest aspen grove and an all round favorite. Shuttle the road to make it easier- most of the elevation gain is on Kebler Pass Road!

Westside
Westside is an epic new piece of single track that will keep you smiling.  Flowing trail sections through forests of aspen and pine are the highlight of this ride.  Westside can also be ridden as an intermediate cross country ride from the top of Red Lady Lift to the base area.

Avery
Avery is the Downhill race course for the annual Wildflower Rush.   Avery throws a little of everything your way as you descend through pine forest, rock gardens, fast open terrain, and man made jumps. You can also finish this run on the Mountain Cross track.  Downhill recommended.


Downhill Designated Trails

Wood’s Trail
A smooth gravity fed trail with a mix of man made obstacles throughout.  Ride the top of Luge and then pedal out through the upper section of Painter Boy to access this trail.  This is a downhill recommended trail that requires riding Gothic Road back to the base area.

Avery
Avery throws a little of everything your way as you descend through pine forest, rock gardens, fast open terrain and man made jumps. You can also finish this run on the mountain cross track.

Psycho Rocks
Begin on Avery and head left shortly from the start. Psycho Rocks is the most technical trail at the resort.  It starts with a series of technical features and then fast and flowing until you hit Psycho Rocks where you must be prepared to select lines through massive boulders and extensive bridging.

Route#1: Jack's, Tail Pipe, The Ridge, Top of the World, Water treatment, Gateway, Josie's, Buddy Bear, Rocky Ridge, Notch, Collarbone Alley

Route #2: Notch, Becks, Rattlesnake, Josh O's, Sawtooth, 9 -0, Outback, Enchanted Forest, Dave Mo', Dirty Sock, Buddy Bear, The Luge, Alonzo's, Hog Back, Free Fall, Beck's, V-Drop

Route #3:  The Original Growler Loop. 32 miles of mostly singletrack and 4,000 vertical, but never more than 400' in a shot!
